Birdman
director:
Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu
cast:
Michael Keaton, Naomi Watts, Edward Norton

Once upon a time Michael Keaton was immediately and universally recognized as iconic superhero, Batman. In Inarritu’s (Babel, Amores Perros) latest, he plays a grizzled and grumpy actor who, once upon a time, was universally recognized by theatre-goers as ‘Birdman’ and is now trying to keep his career aloft by mounting a Broadway play. Family troubles and ego skirmishes make things that much more difficult as our [anti]hero drifts in and out of fantasy as he gains and loses interest in the battle against sinking into ‘has-been’ territory. Birdman—for the line between actor and persona quickly blurs—can’t get along with family, friends, or costars as he reels between ‘artist’ and ‘has-been’. Shot in (what appears to be) one continuous take, the film is fast, sharp, and self-referentially hilarious: The A.V. Club calls it, “a playful, self-consciously meta, showbiz comedy.”
