Christopher Nolan
cast:
Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss

This neo-noir has achieved cult status, a puzzle that demands repeat viewings. Leonard (Pearce) is an insurance investigator trying to solve his own wife’s murder. Since the death, he’s been unable to make new memories, and he’s adrift, forgetting his discoveries about the crime as soon as he makes them, desperately trying to document his quest with Polaroids and tattoos. The film reels backward through time, from the end of Leonard’s search to the murder that set the whole thing in motion, and the suspense isn’t just about whodunnit, but what Leonard will remember. With an exceptional performance by Pearce that makes palpable the terror of Leonard’s search, Memento is “a diabolical and absorbing experience.” (Roger Ebert)
