Freewheelin’ folk singer Llewyn Davis careens through Greenwich Village in 1961. Over the course of a week, a cross-section of New York’s arts epicenter crosses paths with the hapless—however talented—Davis, who, time and again, is stymied by his own shortcomings and naiveté. The Coen Brothers serve up a film that is deadpan and unsentimental, but retains the sardonic style that has made them into contemporary cinematic icons; as David Edelstein writes, “an exquisitely crafted tale of woe with heartfelt early-sixties folk music—and an overarching snottiness.” (New York Magazine)
