With Eternal Sunshine, brilliantly original screenwriter Charlie Kaufmann gets to show his sensitive side. Nerdy and repressed Joel meets wild-haired Clementine one cloudy Valentine’s Day on a desolate Montauk beach; their relationship progresses quickly and ultimately fails, and each eventually seeks the help of Lacuna, Inc. for its patented memory-erasure therapy. It’s a head trip, but at the end of the day, the film is a simple love story, albeit a Kaufmannesque one imbued with philosophical and psychological questions about the importance of memory in shaping one’s life. Gondry’s deft direction allows the story to move seamlessly between present and past tense, memory and fantasy, and Carrey and Winslet couldn’t be better. Winner of the Best Original Screenplay Oscar.
