Chinatown

introduced by Prof. Jonathan Kirshner (Government)

director:
Roman Polanski
cast:
Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, John Huston, Roman Polanski

Nicholson is brilliant as private eye Jake Gittes in 1930s California, who is hired to work an adultery case involving the builder of the city's water supply system. But when the guy is found dead, Gittes is plunged into a complex web of deceit involving murder, incest and municipal corruption all related to the city's water supply. With a fine screenplay by Robert Towne, a wonderful sense of time and place (the formation of L.A. in the ‘30s), and bravura direction from Polanski, Chinatown “is undoubtedly one of the great films of the ‘70s.” (Time Out Film Guide)
