Stalker
director:
Andrei Tarkovsky
cast:
Alexander Kaidanovsky, Nikolai Grinko

A Russian sci-fi/ film noir, set in a post-apocalyptic age. An extra-earthly phenomenon has created “the Zone,” a government-restricted region where natural laws have been altered and each person can realize his deepest desires, led by “the Stalker.” Loosely adapted from Roadside Picnic, a novel by Arkady and Boris Sturgatsky, audiences may find the film oddly reminiscent of David Lynch’s Eraserhead. “Truly a devious movie. The only certain thing is its anti-technological, anti-rational bias—no small dissent in a Soviet society.” (J. Hoberman)
