Solaris
director:
Andrei Tarkovsky
cast:
Donatas Banionis, Yuri Jarvet

Psychologist Kris Kelvin is sent to investigate a space station circling Solaris, a mysterious planet containing an oceanic “superbrain” that causes suicides and strange behavior in the scientists observing it. The Ocean causes each man to be “visited” by a person who has haunted his conscience, which Kelvin experiences in the form of his dead wife. Often called the Russian equivalent of 2001: A Space Odyssey, the film is less a science fiction story than a philosophical one that shows “the fact that the only universe man can truly explore exists inside his own head.” Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes. “Fiercely demanding but newly fitted with more comprehensive English subtitles, Solaris is a dazzlingly imaginative work with awesome production values and special effects that bear comparison to those of 2001.” (LA Times)
