A corrupt mayor of a small town near the Barents Sea in North Russia wants a choice piece of land for his own use, but Kolia is determined to hang onto his property despite the mayor’s threats. When Kolia employs his old army buddy, now an established lawyer in Moscow, to prevent the mayor from having his way, a series of tragic events ensues. This devastating portrait of modern-day Russia won the best screenplay award at Cannes and features a score by Philip Glass. “Zvyagintsev’s pessimism is leavened both by his comedy and his sense of beauty. Mikhail Krichman’s cinematography captures the sublime grandeur of the landscape against which the nasty, brutish and short lives are played out.” (Cinevue)
