Graduation

introduced by Saviana Condeescu (Theatre Arts, IC and CU Institute for European Studies Regional Visiting Fellow)

director:
Cristian Mungiu
cast:
Adrian Titieni, Maria-Victoria Dragus

Doctor Romeo Aldea (Adrian Titieni) thinks that his daughter Eliza’s (Maria Dragus) ability to leave Romania to attend college in England will absolve the years he regrets spending in the country. After a stranger attempts to rape Eliza, traumatizing her and threatening her academic future, Romeo has to compromise his formerly solid morals to help Eliza succeed, perhaps more for his sake than hers. Director Cristian Mungiu painstakingly focuses on the difficult relationships between parent and child as a metaphor for the melancholy of post- Ceaușescu. “Graduation is a thoroughgoing masterpiece which offers proof that Romania’s cinematic upsurge remains the most vital and important national film movement of the current century.” (RogerEbert.com)
