Matthew Hopkins is a self-proclaimed Witchfinder General, going from village to village to draw out confessions from accused witches. The story takes an even more sinister turn when Hopkins’ assistant assaults a war hero’s wife and kills her uncle. A cult film based on Ronald Bassett’s eponymous novel, it was heavily censored in the UK for being too sadistic when it was released. Even though the uncensored US version was completely ignored upon its release, it deserves real attention, and “must certainly be ranked among the greatest horror films of all time. The IIFFF is proud to screen the film in 35mm—don’t miss your chance to see it!” (Hugues Barbier, IIFFF)
