This haunting film recounts a disastrous British military maneuver in World War I on the peninsula of Gallipoli in the Ottoman Empire (modern-day Turkey). The film focuses on a pair of Australian friends (one of them a very young Mel Gibson) who join the military in a moment of brash enthusiasm. The two discover that the military life isn’t what they thought when the British use Australian (and New Zealander) forces to minimize their own losses during the Gallipoli Campaign. The significance of the Gallipoli campaign and those who lost their lives in it is commemorated every April 25 by Anzac Day.
