Rachel Mwanza, Alain Lino Mic Eli Bastien, Serge Kanyinda.

At the age of 12, a girl is kidnapped and forced to join the ranks of a rebel army in Sub-Saharan Africa. When she displays an uncanny ability to detect the presence of the enemy, her ruthless commander declares her his protective “war witch,” but this special status threatens to be short-lived in a world of superstition and senseless brutality. Nguyen worked on the film for a decade, and it shows in both the immediacy and authenticity of his tale, and the meticulous craft with which it's told, including touches of magical realism and an exquisitely chosen soundtrack of African folk and pop music. Nominated for Best Foreign Language film of 2012, War Witch is in French and Lingala, and was filmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
