Based on James Jones’ melodramatic novel of army life in Hawaii just before the attack on Pearl Harbor, Eternity focuses on five people: tough Sgt. Warden (Lancaster) involved in an affair with his Captain’s wife (Kerr); proud Private Prewitt (Clift) in a clash with the army code of conformity and in love with a nightclub hostess (Reed); high-spirited Maggio (Sinatra) who’s locked up in the stockade. Hanging over their lives—and the picture—is a sense of impending doom; beneath their stories is the universal feeling of loneliness and the need for security, understanding, decency and love. And, of course, there’s that great scene of Lancaster and Kerr making-out on the beach.
