Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame
director:
Tsui Hark
cast:
Andy Lau, Carina Lau, Bingbing Li

In seventh century China, two members of the soon-to-be Empress’ entourage burst into spontaneous, mysterious flame. In order to solve the crime, the Empress calls upon brilliant detective Dee Renjie—whom she had previously imprisoned for leading a rebellion against her—the only man talented enough for the job. Despite his past, she brings him out of exile in hopes that he can save the day before her coronation. “Detective Dee is the action flick of the year, a two-hour epic that blows the Pirates of the Caribbean to the Bermuda Triangle.” (The Globe and Mail) “The film is a treasure trove of dizzyingly exquisite fight sequences, backed up by a witty and intelligent storyline that has Dee on the one hand deploying science against the forces of superstition and on the other sees him in conflict with an empress ruthlessly determined to maintain her power.” (Huffington Post) Cosponsored with the Hong Kong Students Assoc.
