Bonsai is a bookish film. Based on the novel by Alejandro Zambra, it tells the story of a young man, Julio, and his doomed-from-the-beginning relationship with a girl named Emilia. It is also the story of a slightly-older Julio, writing the story of his former relationship and passing it off as the work of a famous novelist in order to impress his current girlfriend, Blanca. Throughout it all, the film looks backwards and forwards in Julio’s memories, exploring the meaning of life, truth, and love. “By turns gentle, deadpan, droll and sarcastic, Jiménez’s film reflects on Proust's Remembrance of Things Past to track a sweet but doomed love affair between literary—and pleasurably randy—college students.” (Variety)
