Godard's second film, which was banned by the French government for three years after its filming, presents an ironic picture of the French/Algerian conflict through the disaffected eyes of Bruno, a French Army deserter and erstwhile terrorist. Bruno's commitment to empty convictions mirrors the film's relationship to the conflict itself—both are brutally indifferent observers of the political and personal devastation that comes out of their associations. An important early work, this film, which has tended to be seen out of sequence because of the ban, provides the Godard fan with a fascinating look into the early incarnations of Godard's oeuvre—particularly in the film's obsessive referencing of literary and artistic works. 35mm
