Iron Man

directed by Jon Favreau

with Robert Downey Jr, Jeff Bridges, Gwyneth Paltrow

The latest Marvel Comics character to jump from the page to the screen is Iron Man, the alter-ego of billionaire genius inventor Tony Stark, a Richard Branson-type playboy whose Stark Industries supplies both the good guys and the bad guys with the toys to make wars. Things go awry when our anti-hero is captured by Taliban-esque fighters in Afghanistan and is ordered to create a weapon for them—a charge he uses to create a battle suit for himself that both frees him and jumpstarts his conscience. Once back home, he develops the suit to fight for truth, justice and...well, the good fight. Featuring a superhero cast (Robert Downey, Jr as Stark, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges), Iron Man is a thrilling, smart and meaty summer movie experience. "Is it possible to have yet another expensive excursion into this genre that seems in any way fresh, original and alive? The answer, surprisingly, is yes."
