In the near future, Britain has been leveled by biological agents and a cruelly totalitarian government controls the population with televised fear. Help is on the way, though, in the form of an eerilly charming, Guy Fawkes-masked terrorist calling himself V, who saves a damsel in distress, Evey (Portman), and blows up a London landmark before challenging the population to rise up against their oppressors. As Evey is transformed from bystander to revolutionary (and from tresses to shaved head), the government rushes to find out the identity of the man behind the mask. Adapted from the graphic novel by Alan Moore, the film is remarkably thought-provoking and deep, while never losing the visual and narrative energy of a true Hollywood blockbuster. "V for Vendetta puts its ideological intent first, and happens to provide smashing entertainment only as a vehicle for delivering its message."
