An Inconvenient Truth

Directed by: Davis Guggenheim

With Al Gore

Global warming has long taken a back seat in the public consciousness. Its effects have been too vague, its dire consequences too long term to receive much public outcry. But recent events have brought warming back into the headlines, and it has become harder and harder to find a scientist who doesn't accept the reality of global warming, even if their interpretations differ -- something is happening. The tipping point in public opinion may well be the documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which presents former Vice President Al Gore (who jokingly refers to himself as "the former next President of the United States") giving a lecture he has peddled around the world for decades. Gore, with the weight of presidential politics off his shoulders, presents in clear and understandable terms the absolute importance of the message, one he has championed for more than 30 years. "Virtually everyone who sees this movie will be galvanized to do something about global warming -- and everyone should see this movie." (SF Chronicle) The screening on September 21 will feature a panel discussion with Dean Koyanagi, Cornell's Sustainability Coordinator, and professors Steven Wolf (Natural Resources) and Kerry Cook (Earth & Atmospheric Sciences), moderated by Prof. Ronald Herring (Government).
